The GREEN WORKSHOPS are set up on the beaches and are operative from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Participants are grouped by age (3-5s, 6-8s and 9-12s) so that they will feel more integrated and the activities can be carried out according to the level and needs of each specific group. For the littlest ones to participate, they must be accompanied by an adult who can give proper authorisation. The participation of parents and minders enables them to become involved in the activities and workshops and at the same time to follow the participation of their children. For the fifth consecutive year, the Balears Sostenible Foundation is holding Green Workshops on the beaches of the Balearic Islands. The aim of these workshops is for children and parents, through games and entertainment, to acquire the values and attitudes that are essential for protecting our environment and to show people using the beaches how to care for them better and use them to greater effect. The workshops run by the Foundation have been very popular and highly rated by visitors and residents using our beaches during the summer months.

ACTIVITIES AND WORKSHOPS FOR EVERYONE. AN IMAGINATIVE FORMULA FOR LEARNING.

The instructors have sufficient knowledge of languages to be able to attend to children and youngsters of all nationalities. They are in charge of preparing, coordinating and encouraging participation in the workshops that are held.

The activities are selected and alternated depending on the participants but there are 4 categories that are always carried out: Handicraft, Selective Rubbish, Recycled Fancy Dress and Green Comic.

The essential objectives of these workshops are:

- encouraging the respect of the beach users for their natural surroundings.

- stimulating the areas where the workshops are held, to motivate children in the activities offered.

- making people aware of the activities carried out by the Balears Sostenible Foundation for the conservation of the environment

- transmitting environmental values to the visitors to the beach.

The key lies in getting children and youngsters between the ages of 3 and 12 to participate directly and actively in this learning experience. To achieve this, the activities are organised into small groups, transmitting values that can be applied directly or indirectly once the activity has finished.

AN INITIATIVE THAT MARKS THE SUMMER

In 2008, the tents of the Green Workshops were first set up in July, in Majorca. During the first month they operated on 106 beaches, with the participation of 821 children of various nationalities (Spanish, Italian, German, English, French, Dutch, etc) During the month of August, activities continued from Tuesdays to Sundays on 112 beaches in Majorca, 23 beaches in Menorca and 21 beaches in Ibiza en Formentera, with an average of 30 participants per day. In total, 3,045 children and youngsters took part. One aspect to be highlighted is the involvement of parents in the workshops. Apart from participating together with their children, they also asked where the next workshops would be held and expressed their thanks. The children rated very positively the creative work carried out during the activities. Thanks to initiatives like the GREEN WORKSHOPS and the GREEN CARD, the image of the Islands is improved, and new, highly-valued services are offered to holidaymakers and visitors. From the Balears Sostenible Foundation we will continue working for our environment and for the continued improvement of our most precious asset, the natural environment of the Balearic Islands.
